On November 2, 2024, the South-West Mental Health Conference convened at the International Conference Center (ICC) at the University of Ibadan, drawing a diverse audience of mental health professionals, community leaders, and advocates. Among the speakers was Prof. Sosunmolu Shoyinka, M.D., MBA, Co-founder and CEO of the Curitan Foundation, who contributed significantly to the discussions surrounding the urgent mental health needs of adults in the 21st century.
During his session, Prof. Shoyinka stressed the critical importance of prioritizing mental health, particularly within faith communities. He articulated the necessity for religious organizations to recognize that mental health issues should not be exclusively framed as spiritual problems. Instead, he urged attendees to understand that mental health disorders can be effectively addressed with proper treatment and support.
Drawing from his extensive experience in the field, Prof. Shoyinka shared insights from his latest book, Understanding Mental Health: A Guide for Faith Communities. This straightforward and practical guide aims to help religious leaders better support their congregations in navigating mental health challenges.
The conference fostered valuable conversations aimed at promoting mental health awareness and reducing stigma, with participants leaving equipped with knowledge and strategies to make a positive impact in their communities. The Curitan Foundation continues to champion mental health advocacy, working towards a future where mental well-being is prioritized and accessible to all.
