About us
Putting smiles on Sub-Saharan Africa communities one home at a time.
Fostering the development of mental health service delivery in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Welcome to Curitan Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to fostering the development of mental health service delivery in Sub-Saharan Africa. At Curitan Foundation, our mission is to enhance access to quality mental health services, eradicate stigma, and empower communities to prioritize mental well-being.
Through strategic partnerships, innovative programs, and capacity-building initiatives, we are driving positive change and creating sustainable solutions to address mental health challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa. By collaborating with local stakeholders, healthcare providers, and advocacy groups, we aim to build a strong foundation for mental health support and create a culture of care and support.
Our Mission
To create a suite/package of strategically selected evidence-based interventions, training, and resources that can be adapted for implementation in low-resource settings, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Our Vision
To create a bidirectional pipeline that will facilitate the exchange of ideas, resources, and collaboration between the African continent and other parts of the world to foster the development of mental health service delivery on the continent.
Our Goals
1. To create a platform to develop leaders in the mental health space using telehealth/virtual connections, didactics, mentoring, clinical practicums, and advocacy training by partnering with organizations such as the RWJ, Beck Institute and the University of Pennsylvania.
2. To disseminate evidence based practices such as Psychological First aid and Motivational Interviewing to improve systemic capacity for an appropriate response to mental health challenges by training 1000 peer specialists, community workers, first responders and human service professionals such as teachers and clergy.
3. To collaborate with partners on the African subcontinent to foster the development of and scale promising indigenous practices (such as the Friendship Bench, developed in Zimbabwe).
Our Strategic Plan
Our strategic plan is rooted in a steadfast commitment to capacity building in mental health across Sub-Saharan Africa. Through a comprehensive and innovative approach, we aim to deconstruct stigma, empower providers with specialized skills, engage local partners, and drive policy development in critical areas.
-
Deconstructing Stigma:
Our strategy begins with challenging misconceptions and societal barriers surrounding mental health issues, paving the way for greater acceptance and understanding.
-
Capacity Building:
We equip healthcare providers and ancillary staff with specialized skills through targeted training programs, ensuring they can effectively address mental health challenges in their communities.
-
Partnership Engagement:
Collaborating with local organizations and stakeholders on the ground is key to our success. Together, we work towards a common goal of improving mental health outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa.
-
Policy Development:
By advocating for policy changes and reforms in specific areas, we aim to create a supportive environment that prioritizes mental health and well-being.
